Welcome To My Blog

Dear Moderator,
This blog belongs to Kelly Morris and I worked with Alex Morris, Nathan Hunter, and Graham Wain. We were asked to create a two minute opening sequence to a film noir film including titles. Use the tabs across the top of the blog to see my research, planning, construction and evaluation.

We took approximately three months to create our film and I hope you enjoy the film and my blog.

Regards,

Kelly Morris

California Confidential - Final Cut

Here is our final media product, edited and completed to a high standard. We took on board all feedback we received from the rough cut and applied it to our final cut. Our film fits common conventions of a film noir movie, ranging from the plot to the mise en scene.

Logo - First Attempt

This is our first attempt at our logo for California Confidential. The logo was specifically designed to take on a James Bond theme however, we feel this is too modern for a 1940's noir film. A second attempt will be made to tone down the modern feeling and some other effects will be added so that the logo does not look too bland and dull.

Recce Shots and Test Footage

This video shows recce shots and test footage for our film. We had to record our film twice due to bad weather. So we used the footage from the first attempt at recording as test footage and also used it to expand on any of the shots and how to improve them.

Rough Cut

Feedback
We received feedback that was rather positive yet some aspects needed changing such as: the black and white filter needed to be completed, some of the voices were cut out and parts of speech were lost. Also, some cars were visible in the background which slightly ruins the appeal of a noir film. The introduction was a little drab and no music was audible which makes the scenes seem a little lifeless.
The camera shots used were clean and varied which conforms to the mark scheme. Also, the use of different angles to portray meaning of the scene were understood by the viewing audience.

However, the scene's appeared to be a little rushed and some a little un-coordinated due to some actors not appearing to be focused on the scene by looking at the floor, looking into the distance.

These parts of the rough cut will be changed within the editing process and the final edit will be posted on the 21st March.

Script

Being quite a creative and imaginative person, I decided to take lead in writing the script. I looked closely at other popular film noir movies such as The Godfather and Scarface and adapted certain shots and techniques used in these blockbuster movies and applied them to our script.

Risk Assessment

View more documents from kellymorris92.

Before filming, we must ensure all risks and hazards are abolished and dealt with to prevent any accidents or injuries from occurring.

Storyboard

I have designed a storyboard in order to give our film a storyline and plot. From here, we can see which shots need to be used and when. We can also grasp an idea of what everything needs to look like in our film.

Call Sheet

The call sheet allows us to set locations and times to film our movie. This ensures all team members are up to date and to make sure everything is filmed in time.

Audience Research Questionnaire

View more documents from NathanHunter_

We produced an audience research questionnaire to research what our market wanted from our film and to fit this around the creation of our film. From this, we could hand pick aspects and incorporate them into our opening sequence.

Plot

I designed this plot spider diagram to give me a better idea of what to work with. This diagram displays the plot better than in writing, allowing me to keep up with what I was doing and how far on I was.

Pitch

Pitch summed up in 25 words

Hero protecting his wife, willing to do anything.Encounters a dangerous debt with gangsters, tries to fix things but time is not on his side.

Animatic

This animatic shows a break down of our storyboard and each frame explained. However, we lost all of our separate frames from the storyboard so, in order to finish in time, we had to just explain each frame over an image of our full storyboard.

Institution Research

The institution research discusses stereotypical film noir conventions. It also shows a study into which film noir movies have made it big at the box office and how we could apply this to our film so that it reaches the same outcome.

Audience Research

View more documents from kellymorris92.

To make sure our film was age appropriate and fit around the certificated age of our film, we had to do some research into audiences and what we could and couldn't put into a 15 rated film.

9 Frame Analysis

The 9 frame analysis helped me understand the common composition of the camera in a film noir movie and how certain mise en scene can add emotion and associate with typical characters. I chose Kick Ass as it was a different spin on film noir, making sure i covered all areas of film noir in order to achieve the best I could when creating our opening sequence.

Titles Timeline

Our titles timeline was a breakdown of the opening sequence to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. We thoroughly analyzed when the titles appeared, giving us an idea of how to structure our titles for our opening sequence.

Research Presentation

This presentation was designed and created by Nathan Hunter. He collected ideas from around the film noir genre and put them all together in a research presentation. The prezi shows common conventions of film noir and how we could incorporate them into our film.

Initial Ideas

In this task, we came together as a group to discuss various ideas from each team member about our film. We listened to each others ideas and managed to decide on an idea that we all agreed on and thought was best for our opening sequence.

Opening Sequence Analysis

In order to make sure I had an idea of a film noir opening sequence, I carefully analyzed Sin City, making sure to take ideas from the opening sequence and apply them to my own.

Conventions of Film Noir

For this task, I researched typical film noir conventions in order to get ideas for my film and to apply some of these ideas so they adapt to the film noir genre.
